Clifton: 1867/68 to 1968

Cliftonpit1968Sinking of the shaft began in 1868 and went on to be operational in 1873 but closed in 1968. The Clifton Colliery Company Ltd was well known for their promoting sales of their various types of coal to include: Best Hand Picked House & Steam Coal, Clean Screened Coal and well screened Double & Single Nuts and Peas for household and industries. Interestingly Clifton Colliery was the very first pit to be Nationalised in Nottinghamshire. The seams worked were Deep Soft, Deep Hard, Piper and Tupton. (Low Main seam) Other seams known, Top Hard at 70 yards from the surface but unworkable due to being in water bearing strata, and a seam thickness of 6 feet 9approx).
