New Hucknall: 1874/76 to 1982

New Hucknall Colliery encountered issues but mainly with water underground entering through the strata and even the most up to date pumping machinery could not cope with the challenges. In its early years New Hucknall endeavoured to get to thicker coal seams resulting in higher productivity. With this output the pit eventually employed as many as 1500 men and led on to areas of Huthwaite having to be developed for housing to mome the miners and their developing families.

Other geological problems that other pits experienced added to the mines closure in 1981, with miners either taking redundancy or transferring to nearby pits.
