Pye Hill no.1: 1874 to 1985

pye hill PlateIt was a sad time in 1985 on the last day of production at Pye Hill Colliery near Jacksdale as it finally closed. Many miners from the immediate area relied on this work to help bring their families up and was a very close knit community.

The pit had opened in 1874 and was part of the Nottinghamshire Coalfield that not only developed deep mined coal but also had outcropped opencast mining. Pye Hill was the amalgamation of three pits, according to local historians.
